The Antivirus Myths I Keep Having to Correct
I hear the same handful of claims about antivirus software again and again, usually from people explaining why they've never bothered installing any, or why they gave up on it years ago. Most of these ideas made more sense a decade back than they do now, and a couple of them were never quite true to begin with. None of it is really anyone's fault, security software built up a reputation problem over years of bloated, intrusive programs that genuinely did slow computers to a crawl. But holding onto that reputation today means leaving a door open that doesn't need to be, and I'd rather clear a few of these up properly than let them keep costing people.
It Slows My Computer Down Too Much to Bother
This was a fair complaint once, and it's the one I understand best because I remember living through it myself, watching a machine grind to a halt every time a scheduled scan kicked in. Modern antivirus software is a genuinely different piece of engineering though, built to run quietly in the background using a fraction of the resources older versions needed, scanning files as they're opened rather than churning through the whole drive on a fixed schedule. I run one on every machine I own, including an ageing laptop that struggles with plenty else, and I don't notice it's there day to day. If a specific product is dragging your computer down, that's a reason to look at a better-built one, not a reason to run nothing at all. The gap between a well-optimised product and a badly-built one shows up clearly in independent performance testing, where some antivirus tools barely register on system resources while others still lag noticeably behind, and that difference is worth checking before you write off the whole category based on one bad experience years ago.
Macs Don't Get Viruses
I still hear this from people who've never had a problem and assume that means they're protected rather than lucky, or simply less targeted than they used to be. Apple's operating system does have a solid security architecture, and for a long time Macs represented too small a slice of the market for most attackers to bother with. Neither of those things makes a Mac immune, and as Apple's user base has grown, so has the attention from people writing malware aimed specifically at macOS. I've seen this catch out Mac-owning friends who genuinely believed the myth, clicking through things on their Mac they'd never have touched on a Windows machine because they didn't think it applied to them.
Free Antivirus Is Just as Good as Paying for It
Free versions aren't nothing, and they're a real step up from running nothing at all. But they tend to strip out the features that catch the newer, sneakier stuff, real-time protection against phishing sites, ransomware-specific defences, the kind of behavioural monitoring that spots something acting suspiciously even when it doesn't match a known virus signature yet. Some free tools also make their money by bundling in extra software you didn't ask for or by nudging you constantly toward the paid upgrade, which gets its own kind of annoying. I use Bitdefender on my own devices because the paid version's detection rates hold up consistently well in independent lab testing, and because I'd rather pay for something built to actually stop new threats than rely on a free tool's more basic coverage.

Windows Defender Is All I Need
Windows Defender has genuinely improved over the years and it's no longer the afterthought it used to be, built in and switched on by default rather than something you have to think about installing. For a lot of casual, careful users it does an adequate baseline job. Where it tends to fall short in independent testing is against the newest threats and more targeted attacks, the ones that haven't been seen widely enough yet to be caught by broader detection. If you're someone who banks online, shops online, and clicks the odd link you're not fully sure about, which describes most people I know, a dedicated antivirus product with a stronger track record against zero-day threats is worth having layered on top rather than relying on the built-in option alone.
I Don't Click on Anything Dodgy, So I Don't Need It
I understand the logic here, and being careful about what you click genuinely matters, it's one of the biggest factors in staying safe online. But it assumes every infection starts with a mistake you'd notice making. Malware can arrive through a compromised website that looks completely legitimate, through an infected file a colleague or family member sends you without knowing it's infected, or through an ad on an otherwise trustworthy site. Being careful reduces your risk considerably, it doesn't eliminate it, and antivirus software is there to catch the cases your own judgement was never going to catch in the first place, because there was nothing obviously wrong to notice. I think of it the same way I think about a smoke alarm, being careful with candles and the cooker matters, but I still want something running in the background that catches the situation I never saw coming.
None of this means every antivirus product is worth your money, or that the free options are worthless, they're genuinely better than nothing. It means the specific reasons people give me for skipping antivirus altogether tend not to hold up as well as they used to.
